Political Protest

​Political protests have and do exist on a continuum from the peaceful to violent. Ten historically significant protestants can be found here:

Which include the Boston Tea Party, Tiananmen Square and the Iraq War protests. These are a good starting point as it will help students to appreciate that protests have happened throughout history and across the world.

Students could be divided into pairs or small groups to investigate and report back on an identified protest from the article. They could be asked to create a hand-out for the rest of the class that, as well as providing historical information on the protest, considers the longer term impacts of that protest.

before considering the political motivation for the protestors. They could consider the term ‘gentrification’ and consider whether areas in their own locality have become gentrified.
