Symbolic Interactionism

This is a clear overview of a perspective students often find tricky; and in particular the tree analogy here really helps

After watching the video, students could be asked to think about chocolate. What do they associate with it? Then they could try and structure their thoughts into three, as presented in the video:

  1. What meaning do we as an individual give to chocolate? How does it make us feel? When do we like to eat it? Do we even like it? Do we have any memories that are associated with chocolate? (Action depends on meaning)

  2. What other opinions of chocolate are you aware of? (Different meanings for different people).

  3. Is there anything that could happen to alter our views and thoughts about chocolate? (Meanings can change).
